I’m sure we’ve all seen the Guy Pearce footage filled with cliches of why Canberra sucks.
If you haven’t, here it is.
I was once one of these people. Forced by my parents to move here while in high school I was extremely devastated and for about 4 years maintained that the small outback town I’d moved from was the best place on earth.
Now I’m older and have been in Canberra for just on 10 years. My parents moved away about 5 years ago and I chose to stay, partly because I dreaded the idea of moving and having to start over with friends, mostly because of the lucrative pay in public service.
I also got rid of the ‘I hate Canberra’ attitude and delved into all it has to offer. After you skim the surface of politicians and round abouts Canberra has a lot to offer.
One of my favourite things about Canberra is its layout. Some thought actually went into where buildings and roads would go which has made it easy to get around (compared to Sydney and the like) and great to take a creative picture or two.
I love that peak hour traffic means it will take me a short 20 minutes to get to work, other than a country town where can you get that?
We are in between the coast and the snow so we get to enjoy all seasons in the year, yay for us.
We have some great hidden cafes and restaurants that remind me of the back streets of Melbourne. One of my favourite cafes is Milk & Honey and I love people watching from their outdoor seating area.
And to top it off there is creativity around every corner. We have festivals, galleries, public art and under ground groups.
What do you like about Canberra?
